How We’re Dealing With COVID-19

This is a difficult time for all of us. With stress and anxiety running high, we don’t want you to worry about your pet so we are doing our best to remain open to serve you.

Opening hours

We’ve updated our hours slightly, and will now be open:

  • 8am – 6pm, Monday – Friday

  • 9am – 5pm, Saturday

  • Of course, members can reach us 24/7/365 via our mobile app.

Social distancing measures

Our first priority is to protect our members, our team and the wider community. With this in mind, we’ve taken a number of steps to help limit human interaction.

If you are not feeling well, or there is a possibility you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, we must ask that you have a family member or friend bring your pet to Small Door. We’re also happy to reschedule your appointment if needed.

We’ve also closed our waiting area and have moved to drop-off visits only.

Drop-off procedure

  1. Prior to your visit, our team will confirm your communication preference for normal exams (phone, FaceTime, or Zoom).

  2. When you arrive at Small Door, please wait outside – a team member will come to collect your pet and get them registered.

  3. A team member will stay with your pet throughout their visit to ensure they’re safe and happy.

  4. During exams, we will communicate with you using your preferred medium.

  5. After your pet’s appointment is complete, we’ll give you a call to organize your pet’s pickup.

  6. We’ll return your pet to you at the door and follow up with discharge instructions via email, as usual.

Caring for your pet without leaving home

  • We now offer Pet Pickup and Dropoff
    For your convenience, we are now offering roundtrip pickup and dropoff of your pets within Manhattan or Brooklyn through a partner, for a flat fee of $40. (Please note, an additional cleaning fee applies if your pet soils the car.) All cars are equipped with a harness and drivers are trained on handling pets. If you would like to take advantage of this offering, please call us at (212) 933-9044 prior to your appointment to set up transportation. If you have relocated further away and interested in sending your pet to us, please inquire about pricing.

  • 24/7 live chat
    Members can always chat with our medical team 24/7 via our iOS app or Android app. Please download the latest version of the apps to ensure you’re getting the best experience.

  • Video consults
    We are offering video consults as an alternative to in-practice visits. You can schedule these via the app, via the website, or by emailing or calling.

Hygiene protocols

We’re proud to say that our practice has extremely high standards of cleanliness; however, we’ve implemented additional disinfection protocols for all exam and treatment areas as well as all high-traffic areas and surfaces such as door knobs, tabletops and device displays frequently throughout the day. Our staff have access to personal protective equipment and hand sanitizer for additional disinfection.

Protecting our team

Nothing is more important to us than protecting the physical and mental wellbeing of the Small Door team. We’re incredibly grateful to them for the amazing work they do every day. We’ve reduced the amount of staff we have in the practice each day, (while ensuring we’re still able to deliver exceptional levels of care for your pets), with the others working from home, assisting with our live chat feature. If any team member feels unwell, they have access to fully paid sick leave (on top of their existing personal days) while they recover at home.

PPE donations

We’re happy to say that we rounded up all the personal protective equipment we could spare (while ensuring our team has enough to continue working safely) and donated it to NYU hospital, including gloves, protective gowns and masks. We’re really glad we could do our little bit to help heroes on the front line during this pandemic.

Can my pet get Coronavirus?

It’s understandable to be concerned about your pets, but the CDC and other experts have stated that it’s highly unlikely they could contract COVID-19. There are other strains of coronavirus that more commonly affect cats and dogs, but the primary concern for current pandemic strain, COVID-19, is for human health. Read our article for more information on these other strains, and further information on the three pets that have reportedly “tested positive for COVID-19”.

Whilst the risk of cats and dogs getting sick from COVID-19 is extremely unlikely, there is a very small risk that they could potentially act as vehicles of transmission for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. In the same way that we could pass on the virus to others by touching an object, a person infected with COVID-19 could pass it on by touching pets’ fur coats, their leashes and clothing.

Besides socially distancing yourself and your pet, it is a good idea not to let other people (except those you’re isolated with) touch your pet, and likewise for you not to touch other pets during this time. As always, proper and frequent hand hygiene after touching any surface is a key way to reduce your risk of catching anything.

The CDC has stated that it’s highly unlikely that cats and dogs could contract COVID-19.
